In Pursuit Of Food
A lean, strong, hungry hunter-gatherer tracks his wounded prey through thick jungle foliage. He’s hot, tired, and dehydrated. Deep, dirt-filled creases line his weary, sun-baked face. He relieves his parched throat with a sip of stagnant rainwater from a small pool at his feet. In a moment, a thickly-muscled, yellow-eyed lion that has developed a taste for human flesh – a man-eater – will leap from the shadows and pounce fiercely upon him. A brief life-and-death struggle will ensue before the man is mortally wounded. Some miles away, his family is waiting for food. And they’ll stay hungry.
A fat, weak, overfed businessman, having programmed the address of a bakery into his navigational system, heads down the highway for some donuts. He’s comfortable, rested, and slightly thirsty. His well-scrubbed face is unlined and evenly tanned. He quenches his thirst with a sip of ice-cold soda from a bottle nested firmly in the cup holder. In a moment, years of accumulated arterial plaque will cut off the blood supply to the muscle pulsating within his chest. A brief life-and-death struggle will ensue before the man succumbs to the massive heart attack. Some miles away, his family is eating delivery pizza. His life insurance policy will keep them well-fed.
